FOR AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIERS
"Where Temperament, Health and Breed Standard Matters"
ABOUT AMSTAFS
Although American Staffordshire Terriers (Amstafs) share similar looks and distant genetic links the are definately not the same breed.
Amstafs have been bred to a specfic standard (breed standard) since 1936. They have been bred for a specific type and temperment. Breeders have also been health testing their Amstafs to improve the breed.
There is no standard for the Pitbulls in either the Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC) or the American Kennel Club (AKC).
The major difference between the two breeds is TEMPERAMENT.
In Australia Pitbulls or Pitbull Terriers are classed as a dangerous dog and are a restricted breed, Due to their unpredictable nature. They are also banned from importation. Owning a Pitbull in NSW requires you to inform the council. Council will then arrange a property inspection to ensure all restricted breed obligations are met. (See Royal NSW Canine Council Website for the list of the restricted breeds). Examples are:
Dangerous Dog Signs, Secure Gates and High Fences. The dogs are to be kept in a child proof area and are to be muzzled in all public places the list goes on.
Keep in mind fines for the restricted breeds carry 4 times the normal fine any other breed would incur.
None of these rules apply to the Amstafs apart from secure gates and adequete fencing which applies to all breeds.
So if you are looking to purchase are American Staffordshire Terrier then you should be asking the breeder to see the parents registration papers. If they don't have the papers to show you don't buy it, it's probably a Pitbull or crossbreed. If you do see the papers check if the parents have main registration or limited registration papers. If a dog is on limited registration papers it should have NEVER been bred with so your pup can then never get registration papers.
To always be sure buy only from a recognized breeder. For your own peace of mind.
